March 3rd: Full Worm Moon
This easy art project is a fun mix of crayon and watercolors for a textured look with full color. The Full Worm Moon is on March 3, 2026. It signals the time of year when the ground is warming, worms are coming to the surface, and birds are gathering in the yard. Our yard is certainly full of robins right now, which has inspired this picture.

Materials:
⭐ Watercolor Paint and Paintbrush
Here's a step-by-step process of drawing the robin. Nice and easy!

Tips:
-
Tape your paper down to keep it from sliding around while you work and create a clean, crisp border around your image when the tape is removed. We used regular painter’s blue tape on 140lb watercolor paper. When removing the tape, gently start at one end and pull it down and away from the page (rather than along the edge) to help prevent tearing.
-
Outline the image with black crayon first. You can draw it for your child or have them recreate the picture themselves. Then lightly color in the bird, tufts of grass, and worm.
-
The full moon is created with the white crayon. You won't be able to see it at first, but be sure to really fill in the paper with the crayon to create a waxy resist for the paint. You can add clouds with the white crayon too.
-
Paint your picture with watercolors. It'll fill in all the spots the crayon didn't quite reach. This process is quite satisfying! When you paint the sky, the moon and clouds will appear as you bush over them and the watercolor beads up on the surface rather than absorbing into the paper. You can dab the paint off the moon and clouds with a paper towel.
- Display your finished artwork proudly! We used one of our magnetic Picture Hangers to showcase the completed piece. The one in my photo is the 7-inch size, and it’s perfect for displaying your "Full Worm Moon" painting.
