With all the stimulus and entertainment bombarding our every moment throughout the day, it's time for us to start taking a break to calm our minds, breathing, and focus. You can do so through exercise, meditation, journaling, and so on.

We're presenting you with a new practice, though, that only asks for a few minutes of your attention each day. Choose a time when it is quiet and there are minimal distractions or activity around you. Light the candle, open the book, click your pen, and set a timer. For those precious three to five minutes, give all your attention to the candle flame. You can think about how it moves, how it flickers, the colors in it, the way it seems to be alive. But only allow your thoughts to be about the candle.

If you notice your mind drifting to something else, make a mark on the page and bring your attention back to the flame. If you are monitoring yourself, tracking your thoughts, and being as present as possible, you'll see over time how your focus improves and you have less and less marks on the pages.

Breathe, relax, feel peace and quiet. Release "to do's" and "should have done's or said." Save those thoughts for afterwards. Make this your moment of release from all busyness of mind.
